This browser-based tool allows authoring, sharing, and playback of stories with context to when and where.

Building the authoring experience for a multi-dimensional visual storytelling platform.
This interactive media tool is in the early stages of design and development. I worked closely with the founder and visual design lead to develop a site map and wireframe prototype of authoring components.

The wireframe focused on defining interaction schemas that integrate multiple software tools and UX patterns to create an intuitive and engaging experience for storytellers. With specific consideration towards intuitive data entry and fluid navigation between editing features.

This project is currently in development and under NDA. Please contact me for more information.

Responsibilities: user interface design, wireframes, scenarios and flow diagrams (currently working)

At the same time, other questions arose regarding gentrification, transportation, and balancing natural and urban space. I collaborated with the Glen Park Association to conduct design outreach activities with residents while conducting psychogeographic studies and public interventions on my own.
Connecting a neighborhood across history and geography using qualitative research and interactive storytelling.
The project was an investigation into citizenship and community through the lenses of geography and chronology. Engaging in land revitalization projects and using digital mapping techniques and photo animation, I could situate the role of citizen and activist in the Glen Park community.

Postcards that you send to your neighbor. Postcards are a vivid snapshot and quick greeting to/from a far away friend. These cards, on the other hand, are meant to be circulated within the neighborhood. Sent from the past, the images show life and locations of a Glen Park from long ago. They remind residents of the continuum of citizenship in the neighborhood. They are a call to action to engage with their neighbors in the Glen Park Association and be a part of policy and advocacy for the community.

Public art and graphics concepts for Highway 280 and San Jose Avenue underpasses in Glen Park neighborhood. The abrupt form and careless architecture of the underpasses actively disconnect a section of Glen Park. Approximately 70 local homes were destroyed in the 1960's to construct these roadway arteries in order to carry commute traffic from south of the city through downtown San Francisco.

The large photo-real visuals are a two-way looking glass to reveal Glen Park's geography and history. Walking, biking or driving the underpass path engages citizens with their neighborhood.

A mobile tool concept using text messaging to relay images and stories of Glen Park's past with historic spots corresponding to a geographic display printed in the Glen Park News quarterly. The walking tour encourages neighbors be involved in community organizing and neighborhood storytelling.

*Glen Park is a small residential community in San Francisco with a unique identity. Its urban planning and community of neighbors is a result of its hilly geography, mixed architecture, 'village' downtown' and beautiful Glen Canyon Park. The residential land is scattered with unpaved lanes and staircase walks. BART and MUNI transport customers and neighbors in and out of the village.

History and Citizenship - Advocacy Strategy

Roles: Visual and interface design, video modeling, research probes and documentation, presentation design, exhibition design.

The team explored attitudes and behaviors towards home energy use and sustainability. My process included ethnographic research, visual data models, and rapid prototyping towards delivering a example framework and prototype examples to illustrate design opportunities within an overall program strategy.

Leveraging social networks and data models to motivate energy-saving habits.
Research and design responses addressed the following questions: What is the range of attitudes toward personal and residential energy use among citizens? Do people aspire to change behaviors or other aspects of their personal or residential energy use? If so, what do people see as the barriers to change?

Journey includes:
- design research (ethnography, behavior probes, role playing, personas)
- data visualization
- development of personas
- strategy framework
- rapid prototyping
- user interface design

Upon synthesizing observations from home audits, interviews, and design probes, our group organized data into patterns and personas in order to accurately situate the complex range of energy users into actionable opportunities for prototyping.

We found out that people may trust experts, but information from their social circles is often more trusted than from their energy carrier. Personas showed us that people who care about the environment and are worried about it also take the opportunity to show people their support with artifacts in their homes or through online updates.

I initiated an "Energy Hero" badge-type rating system that could be integrated into platforms like Facebook or Google Maps to celebrate specific homes for energy conscious ways.

I also helped develop a concept for Family Tree, a social networking platform used to encourage small groups to motivate each other to save energy by sharing information, encouragement, and rebates from their energy utility for collective energy-reduction goals.

Responsibilities: Research question guide, interview lead, design research probes, rapid prototyping, data visualization, software application user flow, client presentation

Collaborators: Nikola Otto, Parker Pruett, Caroline Wiryadinata (Research). Bryan Bindloss, Sarah Cline, Defne Beyce (Design).

My process involved deep secondary research in multiple realms of pedagogy and technology, software/hardware system prototyping, classroom deployments, design strategy, and industry publication.

Defining tangible and embodied interaction qualities for new educational technology platforms.
Teachers often use different video technologies to communicate content to students. However, the content is always the subject. Video is also the opportunity for teachers and students to grab the spotlight and explore the orientation and movement of shapes in a more engaging way. I sketched several prototypes using Processing libraries and pedestrian technology like USB cameras, tripods, and flashlights to redefine geometric symmetries through kinesthetic learning and social interaction.

The typical classroom mimics the interactive experience of the theatre with components of stage, performer, and audience. Using the interactive framework of a theatre experience (from J. Stylan's Dramatic Experience) as inspiration I developed a strategic framework to embed the design process into a traditional learning environment.

Pattern Playtable was a advanced prototype with a tangible user interface to study input and feedback models. The platform enables pattern-making (a visual extension of fundamental geometry) through computation while introducing alternative controls and orientations with computational tools. The platform enables a fundamentally more collaborative and personalized experience with learning math

As educator, important to share with academic community in HCI to push how research gets done and consider teaching community and functions of classroom.

Responsibilities: interviews, deep secondary research, movement studies, software sketching, prototype deployments, design strategy, book design, conference presenter, article author

During the GameMakers Challenge, students collaborated to create a variety of games using the Design Thinking framework. I designed every aspect of the event, including on and offline branding, workshop itineraries, and research graphs. I also developed story lines and artifacts for (the now infamous) GameMaster character and curated prototyping materials and building supplies for 200 students.
Integrating a human-centered design process into formal learning environments through collaborative brainstorming and hands-on prototyping.
I created visual graphs, facilitator guides, and game activities to scaffold the experience over the three-day project. Students built connective tissue maps to reveal similarities and preferences. Game concepts like rules and objectives were introduced through playing a game and prototyping game improvements (new game pieces, different rules, etc). Facilitators and teachers work more intimately with student groups to develop their games in preparation for a campus-wide exhibition.

Game prototypes revealed students' desires and preferences. This way the GameMakers Challenge helped to define the new school community while experiencing a sophisticated human-centered design process. Debrief sessions from the GameMakers Challenge revealed new opportunities for design to mediate and improve school design activities, including: Student workbooks for documentation and evaluation, brainstorming games and student design ambassadors.

With a foundation in Design Thinking and collaborative creation we developed the Design Challenge program at REALM to address campus safety and develop student-led campus services.

Responsibilities: Program director, creative director, visual design and production, media design, data visualization, resource manager, team facilitator, social media manager

Originally, the table was devised as a vessel for digital sensors that would be "played" by standing around the table. The project evolved into a more conscious study of craft and construction informing conceptual design of proprioceptive furniture that speaks through sonic patterns.

Investigating formal properties of embedded objects through materials, technique and craft.
A symmetric combination of 33 pieces of walnut and maple, the form of the object mimics the table's sensory abilities through a combination of form, material, and color.

Octune uses an electronic brain (programmed microcontroller) and nervous system (infrared proximity sensors) situated around the apron. Octune’s eight legs highlight an overall contrast of walnut and maple, with repeating corners and curves that create their own movement and facilitate flow.

Consultants: Russell Baldon and Andrew Perkins

Curating themes and materials that enable community members to productively discuss challenges by building solutions in context.
Written instructions led each group to a wooden crate with all the goodies available for working through their challenges. The open narratives encouraged an experience with delightful visuals and provocative objects that would in turn inspire other folks to interact, discuss, and generate solutions towards improving the culture and institution of CCA.

California College of the Arts (CCA) hired IDEO to help shape the future of CCA's mission and goals as a school and community. The event provided the research basis for the school's 2010 Strategic Plan.
